After World War II, the popularity of small sports cars surged among American soldiers stationed in Europe. In response to this demand, various European manufacturers competed to develop small-displacement sports cars.
Britain’s Triumph played a part in this, initially developing a prototype called the TR1. This was then made more user-friendly for civilian use and debuted as the TR2 model. However, the TR2 faced overheating issues and the need to develop a model with even higher-performance brakes and suspension to withstand use in the US. This led to the introduction of the model we’re now introducing: the TR3.
The engine is a Standard Motor Company-made water-cooled 4-cylinder OHV, 1991cc, producing 95 horsepower. It has a respectable top speed of 175 km/h. The suspension was revised to an independent double-wishbone setup at the front and a live rear axle system at the rear, evolving into a model with even better road-holding compared to the previous TR2. Furthermore, from this model onward, the front brakes were equipped with Girling hydraulic disc brakes, giving it first-class performance among British small sports cars of the era.
Its distinctive body, with deeply cut doors, independently rising front and rear fenders, and uniquely protruding headlights, gained immense popularity for its highly individual style, earning support from sports car fans worldwide, including in America. With its simple structure, excellent serviceability, robust engine, and tough chassis, it was a car that even amateur enthusiasts could easily maintain, and it was widely used in motorsports.
This vehicle was first registered in Japan in 2022. As you can see, the body, engine, and suspension have all undergone a frame-off restoration. The interior and other elements have also been thoroughly refurbished, resulting in a condition that could not be better. It is in a state where it can be driven immediately or used for events. It is rare to find a TR3 that has been so thoroughly restored.
