With IVORY INLAYS of clear Renaissance Inspiration.
Italian “Master Cabinetmaker” of the eighteenth century with ivory inserts
applied in England at the beginning of the nineteenth century Center desk
inlaid in ivory veneered in briar with black frames, three drawers on the
band plus two doors, four feet with castors-
Measurements: Height 82.4 cm – Length 118 cm – Depth 61cm.
The desk recalls the morphological and decorative details of Lombard
furniture of the “black frame” genre produced in Lombardy around the middle
of the eighteenth century.
Lombard furniture is only a general source of inspiration since it should be
noted that there are no furniture with this structure and design inlaid in
ivory in the Lombard type.
It is a fascinating object decorated with inlays of chimerical figures in
Italian arabesque ivory, engraved and raised with black ink.
A peculiarity of the furniture is the finesse of the details about the
morphological and decorative details of Lombard furniture of the type “black
frames” produced in Lombardy around the mid-eighteenth century. Lombard
furniture is only a general source of inspiration as it should be noted that
there are no Lombard-type pieces with this structure and design inlaid with
ivory.
This is a fascinating object decorated with inlays of chimera figures in
Italian arabesque style in ivory, engraved and highlighted with black ink. A
particular feature of the piece is the fineness of the neo-Renaissance
details and the high quality of its engraving. On the top of the piece is
inlaid an important scene from the Iliad representing a Greek chariot driven
by two men that is halted by another chariot that has crossed in front.
Meanwhile, on the sides appear two figures: Zeus with lightning and an
eagle, and a warrior dressed in Eastern attire.
Finally, on the back of the desk looms a lansque net warrior, inspired by
iconographies from German engravings.
In conclusion,
the piece of furniture is a unique and singular example of interweaving
between an Italian hull and an English workmanship.
