THE LEGEND RETURNS — The Spirit of “La Dolce Vita”
Born in the late 1950s in collaboration with Carrozzeria Ghia, the original Fiat 500 Jolly was created not as a transportation tool, but as a luxury leisure vehicle for seaside resorts and private estates .
Its unmistakable features — open sides, striped soft top, hand-woven wicker seats, and polished chrome trim — expressed the essence of freedom, elegance, and Mediterranean summer living.

History of the Fiat 500 Jolly — A Deeper Story
1957–1958: Birth — “Not just transportation, but a symbol of luxury.”
In 1957, FIAT introduced the 500 (Cinquecento).
Soon after, FIAT Chairman Gianni Agnelli envisioned:
“A playful car that expresses the status of its owner.”
He commissioned the high-end coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia,
and thus the FIAT 500 Jolly (Spiaggina) was born.
The concept at that time was:
“A car to ride as an extension of a yacht by the seaside.”
Key characteristics:
- No doors / open sides
- Wicker (rattan) seats (dry quickly and resist salt damage in humid coastal environments)
- Striped canvas sunshade
- Chrome accents
Rather than practicality, the focus was on leisure, elegance, and resort enjoyment.
It was developed as a vehicle to be used for yachts, private villas, and beach clubs.
1959–1964: Expansion with the resort culture of the wealthy
Because of its unique character, from the moment it went on sale,
it captured the hearts of European royalty, movie stars, politicians, and business leaders.
Ownership and usage are clearly documented:
- Gianni Agnelli(FIAT Chairman) — Used at his private villas and in Capri. Made the Jolly a symbol of luxury.
- Jackie Kennedy Onassis — Used on her yacht Christina O. Helped spread the Jolly’s fame worldwide.
- Princess Grace of Monaco — Used as a family car in Monaco.
- Elvis Presley — Said to have used it for private beach transportation.
- Yul Brynner — Owned one for his vacation home.
- Enrico Berlinguer / Silvio Berlusconi — Owned not just as politicians, but as lifestyle statements.
- Lando Norris(modern era F1 driver) — Owns one in Monaco. Renewed attention to its classic value.
The selling price was two to three times higher than a standard FIAT 500.
It was not a car for ordinary people —“A car created purely for enjoying summer,” which made it a symbol of luxury

U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) driving his 500 Jolly on his Texas ranch with his family.
1964–1968: Becoming a global design icon
Its extremely impractical yet ultimately luxurious concept attracted global attention.
Used as:
- VIP shuttle at luxury hotels (Capri, Amalfi, Portofino)
- Resort cart for private beaches
- Sub-car for yachts and cruisers
It wasn’t “a vehicle.” It was a lifestyle instrument.

1990s–Present: Revival in the collector market
Because very few were produced and even fewer survive today, prices surged in the collector market.
Auction records include:
- Examples selling for over USD $300,000
- Featured repeatedly at Pebble Beach / RM Sotheby’s auctions
As the ancestor of modern resort cars, it gained recognition in design history,
and was eventually added to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
“The only compact car exhibited at MoMA.”
A car that has left its mark on design history.
2020s: Reborn for today — Jolly Tribute (Thermic / Electric)
Because originals are scarce and nearly impossible to obtain, a project began to revive it using authentic vintage FIAT 500 donor cars.
Faithful to the original atmosphere:
- Wicker seats
- Soft top canopy
- Chrome detailing
Two choices that cross generations:

- Electric (Made in Japan EV technology) — silent, smooth, and effortless
Two choices across eras.
